This certified BI Aurelianianus (a silvered bronze denomination) was issued by Emperor Carus, who ruled for just over a year during the Crisis of the Third Century—a time when emperors rose and fell at the edge of a sword, and the empire fractured under the weight of military rebellion, plague, and inflation.
 
Despite his short reign, Carus led successful campaigns against Germanic tribes and launched a bold (and rare) Roman military expedition into Mesopotamia, where he allegedly died under mysterious circumstances. While some sources attribute his death to a lightning strike, others suggest illness or assassination.
 
Carus ascended during one of the empire’s most volatile decades and governed with a surprising degree of stability and military success. His reign is best remembered for:
